The new building on the grounds of the Munich prison offers 94 beds and treatment rooms across 4,600 square meters of usable space. From dental care to an infection ward, everything is available, said prison director Clemens Schmid at the completion ceremony. “We can provide adequate, modern care for sick inmates,” Schmid said. “It’s not about luxury, but about humane treatment.”

Many inmates are “in a shockingly poor state of health,” said former director Michael Stumpf. The state of Bavaria invested 65 million euros in the construction. General practitioners and internists work permanently in the unit, while specialists come from outside as needed. Surgeries cannot be performed on site.

The old medical wing was located in the north building, constructed in 1894. There, buckets served as toilets until the 1960s. Regulatory authorities had recently warned of critical conditions. The new building was constructed while the prison remained operational, under strict security precautions.
