Tribeca Film Festival premiered 'Dreams of Violets,' the first fully AI-generated feature film. Directors like Steven Spielberg and Gore Verbinski are calling for clear boundaries on the use of artificial intelligence in cinema.

Iranian-British artist Ash Koosha made ‘Dreams of Violets’ without a camera, actors, or film set – the images were created entirely with artificial intelligence. The film tells the story of the protests in Iran. Koosha emphasizes that without AI, the project would have been too dangerous and too expensive. For many filmmakers, this is a step toward democratizing cinema: stories could emerge independently of studios and million-dollar budgets.

But prominent directors warn of the risks. Steven Spielberg sees AI as a tool that should never make the final creative decision. Telling stories, writing dialogue, or developing characters – that must remain human. ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ director Gore Verbinski goes further: ‘Soon you’ll be able to order a film, say in the style of Christopher Nolan, as if he had directed ‘The Godfather’ with talking frogs.’ AI only learns from what already exists, while real directors don’t want to repeat themselves.

Pixar creative chief Pete Docter compares AI to fire: ‘It can warm you, heat the house, and cook food – or burn everything down. It depends on how you use it.’ Netflix is already using AI, for example for special effects in the series ‘The Eternaut.’ Since the Hollywood strikes, dealing with artificial intelligence has become one of the industry’s major future questions. The key question is what role AI should play in the creative process going forward.
