The football World Cup is being accompanied by a wave of discontent and unsportsmanlike actions. Several defeated teams have filed official protests with FIFA, including Egypt, Croatia, and Algeria. Particularly explosive: Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla insulted France’s star Kylian Mbappé with racist remarks after Paraguay’s defeat – the case is now with the public prosecutor’s office.
Egypt’s coach Hossam Hassan even speaks of a conspiracy. After the defeat against Argentina, in which his team squandered a 2-0 lead, he said: “That was a manipulated game. Maybe they wanted Messi to stay in the race!” Referee performances are also under criticism: decisions are inconsistent, and the referees at this level are often overwhelmed.
US Donald Trump also got involved – he called FIFA Gianni Infantino about the red card for US striker Folarin Balogun. The consequences for football are not yet foreseeable.
