According to a passenger who spoke to the German Press Agency, travelers on the Ryanair flight to Memmingen heard a loud bang shortly after takeoff. A window pane had shattered. Fellow passengers had to hold the man sitting next to the damaged window because his head and shoulders were protruding from the opening, an eyewitness told Greek broadcaster ERT. Other passengers managed to pull the man back inside.
Oxygen masks dropped from the ceiling in the cabin, as seen in photos and videos on social media. The pilot aborted the flight and returned to Thessaloniki Airport. The return flight took about 20 minutes. The affected passenger, a man from Serbia, was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Thessaloniki. Greek authorities have launched an investigation.
Ryanair arranged a replacement aircraft, which departed Thessaloniki at 9:53 a.m. local time to bring the passengers to Memmingen. The cause of the incident remains unclear. Memmingen Airport, located about 100 kilometers west of Munich, is served by Ryanair from several European cities as well as Jordan and Morocco.
