British defense companies supplying weapons and drones to Ukraine have been warned of heightened Russian espionage and hostile intelligence activity. The warning came at a meeting with senior government officials in the summer, as reported by The Mail on Sunday.

The warning was issued at a meeting with senior British government officials and defense industry executives held in the summer. The full list of participants was not published. Companies producing drones and weapons are considered particularly interesting to Russian intelligence services, as they directly contribute to Ukraine’s ability to strike Russian military targets.

The warning comes against the backdrop of uncovered Russian assassination plots against European defense executives. US and German intelligence services foiled a Russian plan to murder Armin Papperger, CEO of the German defense company Rheinmetall, who holds a £4.2 billion artillery shell order for Ukraine.

Elisabeth Braw, a security expert at the Atlantic Council, told the newspaper that defense executives in Britain and Europe are increasingly concerned about their personal safety and the security of their facilities. She noted that Moscow has signaled it considers anyone linked to the Western defense sector a legitimate target.
