According to the survey, 41 percent of respondents fully agreed that it would be a danger to democracy if the AfD came to power in Saxony-Anhalt. Another 12 percent tended to agree. Overall, more than half of Germans are concerned.
The concern is unevenly distributed: While 57 percent in western Germany express such worries, only just over 38 percent do so in eastern Germany. There are also differences between genders – men are less concerned than women.
A narrow majority also spoke out in favor of the firewall: 43 percent rejected the statement that the CDU should open up to cooperation with the AfD, and 8 percent tended to reject it. When it comes to a possible opening to the Left Party, opinions are divided: Four out of ten respondents reject this, while nearly four out of ten agree.
Respondents view the consequences for people with a migration background particularly critically: 43 percent fully agreed that their security situation would worsen if the AfD won the election, and 15 percent tended to agree. Ipsos surveyed around 2,100 people nationwide from August 26 to 31; the results are representative of eligible voters in Germany.
