The street closure is linked, according to Ukrainska Pravda, to the disappearance of Stepan Kaplunov, deputy commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps, a unit fighting on the Ukrainian side against Russia. Authorities had confirmed the previous day that a missing person report had been filed.
According to Ukrainska Pravda, three HUR members were wounded in the incident on the morning of September 2. Police told a correspondent of the newspaper that a “special police operation” was underway at the scene. Officers cordoned off the street with tape and diverted pedestrians.
Kyiv City State Administration (KMDA) said that due to the closure of Yurii Shumskyi Street in both directions, bus routes 87, 95, and 108 are being rerouted. The buses now travel via Berezniakivska Street, Pavlo Tychyna Avenue, and the Dnipro embankment road.
On September 1, the Russian Volunteer Corps said Kaplunov had been abducted by unknown individuals in a courtyard. The State Bureau of Investigation confirmed to Ukrainska Pravda that a report from the fighter’s lawyers had been filed. On September 2, the SBU announced that, together with the HUR, it had prevented a terrorist attack against a leader of the Russian opposition, without providing details.
