School supplies, club fees, lunches, tutoring: families on basic income support, housing benefit or child supplement can claim – often without a separate application.

Families in Munich who receive basic income support (Grundsicherungsgeld), social assistance or asylum-seeker benefits – or whose parents get housing benefit or the child supplement – are entitled to the Education and Participation Package for their children. Many never claim all of it because they don’t know what it includes.

It covers children and young adults under 25. The City of Munich lists everyone receiving benefits under SGB II, SGB XII or the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act, plus children whose parents receive Wohngeld or Kinderzuschlag. Ukrainian families qualify if they receive one of these benefits; nationality is not a criterion.

What is actually paid for

School supplies come to €195 per school year, paid as €130 for the first half and €65 for the second. Sports, music or cultural activities get up to €15 a month, but only until the child’s 18th birthday and only against proof of a paid activity. On top of that the package pays for the shared school or nursery lunch, day trips and longer school trips, and the journey to school – in Bavaria usually already free up to Year 10 under a separate state law.

Tutoring is covered if the child’s progression is at risk: up to €28 an hour one-to-one, up to €18 in a group. The school has to confirm the risk (a school report also works). Parents pick the provider.

Our own calculation: an eight-year-old who plays in a sports club adds up to €195 for supplies plus €180 for the club, so up to €375 a year. For two children that is €750 – before lunches and trips.

Where to apply

If you receive Grundsicherungsgeld, social assistance or asylum-seeker benefits, you claim the package with every new or renewed application: tick what your child needs on the “Anlage BuT” form. School supplies are paid without a separate request. Only tutoring needs its own application. If you receive housing benefit or the child supplement, you must apply for everything explicitly, using the form under section 6b of the Federal Child Benefit Act.

Applications go to your local Sozialbürgerhaus (Mon–Thu 8am–4pm, Fri 8am–12pm); Jobcenter clients can upload the form in their account on Jobcenter.digital. The asylum-benefit version goes to the Amt für Wohnung und Migration at Werinherstraße 89. Forms are at muenchen.de/but. Attach your current benefit notice and proof showing the bank details of the club or music school. There is no fee.

On deadlines: the city names none. For claims under the Federal Child Benefit Act – housing benefit and child supplement – the federal FIM portal says they lapse 12 months after the end of the month in which they arose. Don’t wait: September’s club fee can probably still be recovered in October; last year’s probably cannot.

Our assessment: the best moment is your next renewal application. If you are filling it in anyway, don’t skip the BuT form – it takes five minutes and can be worth several hundred euros. Whether amounts or responsible offices change for Ukrainian families under the planned switch of jurisdiction is still open. Munich’s leaflet is dated July 2026.
