After several suspected far-right attacks in Cottbus, the Christopher Street Day (CSD) on Saturday will take place under heightened security measures. Police will accompany the demonstration to send a signal against right-wing extremism.

Organizers expect around 500 participants, who will start at the city hall at 4 p.m. Police have increased their presence after several attacks caused unease last week. Brandenburg’s Interior Minister Jan Redmann (CDU) had previously announced enhanced security measures.

Investigators assume two perpetrators from the far-right spectrum. They are examining, among other things, an arson attack on the alternative housing project “Zelle 79” – here, investigations are underway for attempted murder. Additionally, an attempted arson at a club and a smashed window at the Green Party’s office are being investigated.

The organizers advise participants to travel in groups and avoid dark paths. A free shuttle service between the city hall and the main train station is available. A counter-demonstration has not been registered, a police spokesperson said.
