Summer holidays begin this weekend in several German states, triggering the first major travel wave of the year. ADAC expects a surge in holiday traffic between Friday afternoon and Sunday afternoon.
According to ADAC, highways particularly at risk of congestion include the A1 from Cologne to Fehmarn, the A7 from Füssen to Flensburg, the Berlin Ring (A10 to A12), the A95 in the south (Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen), the Munich motorway ring (A99), as well as the A4 and A9 in Saxony. Hermsdorfer Kreuz is expected to be especially affected. Delays may also occur at the Erfurter Kreuz.
ADAC lists a total of 28 highways as particularly congested stretches. In addition, there are around 1,000 roadworks sites on Germany’s highways. For example, the A1 in Hamburg between Stillhorn and Harburg will be closed this weekend due to bridge construction. And on the A2, the Kamener Kreuz in the direction of Hanover is closed.
Furthermore, the extreme heat over the past weekend has caused road surface damage—so-called blow-ups—on several routes. In Brandenburg, the A10 will be fully closed this weekend between the Potsdam-Nord and Spandau junctions for repairs. The A2 and A14 in Saxony-Anhalt were also affected. According to the federal Autobahn GmbH, traffic there should resume on Thursday.
ADAC advises drivers to avoid the midday heat and to travel early in the morning or in the evening. Monday and Tuesday outside of rush hour are particularly suitable as relaxed travel days.
