The IG Metall union is calling on Volkswagen employees to take part in a nationwide day of action on Thursday. On that day, the company’s supervisory board will meet in Wolfsburg to discuss possible cuts. The union announced actions at all VW locations. IG Metall stresses that these are not warning strikes, as a peace obligation applies at Volkswagen.
The protests are triggered by reports of tightened cost-cutting plans at the carmaker. According to media reports, up to 100,000 jobs could be cut worldwide, and four plants in Germany are reportedly at risk of closure. VW itself did not confirm the details but speaks of a “comprehensive transformation.” IG Metall chairwoman Christiane Benner described the protests as “a clear signal to the board: Not with us!” and demanded concepts for utilizing the plants.
