Kahn was recognized for his sporting achievements and social commitment. After the ceremony, he said he felt great gratitude toward the people who had supported him. He accepted the award on behalf of many companions.

As an athlete, he said, he had stood on the sunny side of life, so he saw it as his duty to give something back to those who are less fortunate. Through his foundation, Kahn supports disadvantaged children and young people with educational and sports projects. The laudatory speech noted that he combines sporting excellence with social responsibility.

In addition to Kahn, honorees included winter sports athlete Denise Herrmann-Wick, mountaineer Thomas Huber, and boxer Tina Rupprecht. From the cultural sector, cabaret artists Willy Astor and Bruno Jonas, film producer Oliver Berben, and pop musician Stefan Zauner received the order. Research Minister Dorothee Bär (CSU), scientist Ursula Münch, and ESA chief Josef Aschbacher were also honored.

The Bavarian Order of Merit has been awarded by the minister-president since 1957. According to the state chancellery, the number of living recipients should not exceed 2,000.
