Schneider stated that the federal government’s rules of procedure had not been followed in this case. According to media reports, Reiche had pledged in the EU Council of Ministers that Germany would support a suspension of the regulation – against the government’s agreed line.
The environment minister insists on his department’s lead role. He called Reiche’s approach toward the EU Commission “a procedure that is not in order.” He had already made this clear in a bilateral conversation, Schneider said in response to questions from lawmakers.
The EU Methane Regulation aims to reduce emissions of the climate-damaging gas from the energy sector. Schneider emphasized its importance for climate protection: the federal government supports the Commission in maintaining the regulation. “Reliability also means implementing this methane law into national law and not postponing anything,” the SPD politician said.
