The five CuBy satellites have been in orbit since July 7, 2026. They are set to provide images of Bavaria every three days, which will be analyzed using artificial intelligence. Previously, according to Finance Minister Albert Füracker, new aerial photos from aircraft were only available every two years. The satellite mission represents a “completely new dimension of timeliness,” Füracker said.
The satellites measure 37 by 23 by 10 centimeters and weigh 14 kilograms. They photograph a strip of Bavaria about 80 kilometers wide, covering areas including Munich and Nuremberg. Individuals are not recognizable, Füracker emphasized. The images have a resolution of four meters.
The data is intended to assist in situations such as floods or bark beetle infestations. Applications in agriculture and forestry are also planned. The Free State is investing 18.2 million euros in the network. The project is initially designed for five years, after which the satellites will burn up in the atmosphere. A decision on a full mission with 25 satellites will be made after an evaluation phase.
