The “Law to Promote Climate-Neutral Mobility” provides for socially tiered funding that applies retroactively from the beginning of the year. Applications are expected to be possible from May via a new online platform.
The premium is income-dependent: it applies up to a taxable annual income of 80,000 euros; with children, the limit increases by 5,000 euros per child to a maximum of 90,000 euros. For pure electric cars, there is at least 3,000 euros; for plug-in hybrids or range extenders, a base of 1,500 euros. Families receive an extra 500 euros per child, and households with an annual income below 60,000 or 45,000 euros get an additional 1,000 euros.
There was already a purchase premium (Umweltbonus) between 2016 and 2023, which was abruptly stopped by the former traffic-light coalition. This led to a slump in new e-car registrations in 2024. Numbers are now rising again: in March, new e-car registrations increased by 66.2 percent compared to the same month last year. According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, the share of e-cars among new registrations was 24 percent, surpassing that of gasoline cars.
