Germany's federal police ombudsman, Uli Grötsch (SPD), reports a sharp increase in complaints. According to the German Press Agency, the number of submissions rose by 58 percent compared to the same period last year.

Presenting his third activity report, Grötsch spoke of a significant increase. Complaints from citizens rose particularly sharply, increasing by more than 70 percent to 323. Employees of federal police authorities submitted 98 complaints – an increase of around 25 percent.

In terms of content, the ombudsman dealt with the consequences of controls at Germany’s borders, allegations of discrimination and racial profiling, as well as sexual harassment within the police force. The culture of error and the poor structural condition of buildings were also topics.

The office of the Federal Police Ombudsman was created in 2024 by the traffic-light coalition. Grötsch is responsible for the Federal Police, the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), and the police at the Bundestag. He and his 20 employees are tasked with uncovering structural deficiencies and serve as contact points for citizens who feel they have been treated unfairly.
