More than 15,500 people have signed a petition against the planned closure of the maternity ward at St. Josefs Hospital in Potsdam. The ward is set to close on August 1 as part of hospital reforms.

Since it opened in April 1997, more than 10,000 children have been born there, according to the hospital. The closure is planned for August 1 and was announced earlier this week.

The petition against the ward’s closure has already collected over 15,500 signatures. Mothers and fathers have expressed their dismay in comments. One woman wrote that the ward was a place full of warmth and care. Another mother reported that the team did everything to avoid a cesarean section when complications arose.

The closure of the maternity ward also means the end of Brandenburg’s only baby hatch. Potsdam’s mayor Noosha Aubel (independent) spoke in favor of setting up a baby hatch at the municipal Bergmann Clinic. Starting in August, the Bergmann Clinic will also reduce its services and no longer offer orthopedics and vascular surgery.
