Russian forces are increasingly using so-called reactive Shahed drones in attacks on the Ukrainian capital, which are difficult to intercept. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia attacked the country overnight into August 31 with a Kh-59 cruise missile and 121 combat drones, most of them reactive. 96 drones were shot down, and the missile missed its target.
On Sunday alone, nine air alerts were issued in Kyiv between midnight and evening. In the afternoon, the city’s military administration reported debris falling on the grounds of a residential complex in the Pechersk district. Two people were injured in the air attacks on Sunday, and two more in the outskirts of Kyiv.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said the Russian tactic aims to exhaust Ukraine. Within a week, Russia had fired nearly 2,000 combat drones, more than 1,600 glide bombs, and 31 missiles. Most air alerts in Kyiv and other regions were due to reactive drones. He said Ukraine is working on interceptor drones, and four companies have already developed models.
