Karin Angerer, the current president of the Bamberg Higher Regional Court, will become president of the Federal Court of Justice (BGH). The 62-year-old native of Würzburg is to assume office on September 1. The Bavarian Justice Ministry announced the cabinet’s decision. Earlier, in mid-June, the Federal Judge Election Committee had elected Angerer as a federal judge.

“I am very pleased that an outstanding jurist from Bavaria will now lead Germany’s highest court for civil and criminal proceedings. Dr. Karin Angerer is an excellent choice and a highly experienced leader,” said Bavarian Justice Minister Georg Eisenreich (CSU). Angerer began her legal career in 1993, working as a prosecutor and judge in Munich, among other roles. She headed various departments in the state’s Justice Ministry and served as vice president of the Munich II Regional Court before moving to Bamberg as president in 2023.

The BGH is Germany’s highest court in civil and criminal matters. Bettina Limperg has led the court since 2014. Her term ends on August 31. The BGH was founded in 1950 and is based in Karlsruhe.
