The Verkhovna Rada has extended martial law in Ukraine and general mobilisation by a further 90 days – until 29 January 2027. The news agency Ukrinform reports this.

According to Ukrinform, 293 MPs voted on Monday to confirm the corresponding decree by President Volodymyr Zelensky (law No. 16182). The resolution to extend general mobilisation (No. 16183) received 281 votes. According to the independent online outlet Hromadske, one MP voted against extending martial law; it is the 21st extension since the start of Russia’s war of aggression. The laws take effect on 31 October.

Before the vote, the Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council, Ihor Klymenko, told parliament that implementing the decree would enable appropriate measures against armed aggression and safeguard Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. At the same time, it would extend the powers of state bodies, the military command, military administrations and local self-government bodies that are needed to repel the aggression.

According to Hromadske, during martial law the freedom of movement of citizens, foreigners and stateless persons, as well as traffic, can be restricted, labour duty and socially useful work can be ordered, or private property can be forcibly expropriated. The activities of certain parties and associations can also be banned. During this period, the powers of parliament, the government, courts and the ombudsman may not be terminated, the constitution may not be amended and no elections may be held.
